Gender Identity Clinic Information Session for GPs

Speech and Language Therapy paper published in the International Journal of Transgenderism

Matthew Mills, Gillie Stoneham and Ioanna Georgiadou have had their evidence paper published on the International Journal of Transgenderism website.

Their paper, Expanding the evidence: Developments and innovations in clinical practice, training and competency within voice and communication therapy for trans and gender diverse people, looks at identified gaps in research to show:

  • an expansion of the evidence base in advances in voice group therapy for trans women and trans men
  • the importance of delivering voice and communication therapy as part of a complete approach to trans and gender diverse health care
  • developments in training and competency in the UK.

The evidence gathered supports group therapy as a successful approach for trans individuals through a range of parameters of voice and self-perception as well as having speech and language therapy within gender clinics providing voice and communication as part of a broader pathway of care.

Matthew Mills is the  Lead Specialist Speech and Language Therapist (Voice and Communication) and Head of Speech and Language Therapist Service at Charing Cross Gender Identity Clinic, London.

Gillie Stoneham is an advanced speech and language therapist, specialising in transgender, voice therapy and coaching. She is also the Director and co-founder of ActorFactor.

Ioanna Georgiadou is the transgender voice specialist at the Nottingham Centre for Gender Dysphoria (NHS). She is also the founder of Trans Voice Therapy a service that offers voice therapy for adults and adolescents.

British Medical Journal – Gender dysphoria for non-specialists

Dr. James Barrett, lead clinician in the Charing Cross Gender Identity Clinic (GIC) has authored a piece in this months British Medical Journal.

The article explores assessment and management of patients with gender dysphoria for non-specialists, and is available in the July print edition of BMJ. Non-subscribers can access the article online on a trial basis via the BMJ site.

The Gender Identity Clinic is the largest and oldest gender clinic in the UK, dating back to 1966. It accepts referrals from all over the UK for for adults (from the age of 17 years 9 months)  with issues related to gender. It is a multi-disciplinary administrative and clinical team, including psychologists, psychiatrists, endocrinologists and speech and language therapists. The team works together in order to provide holistic gender care, focusing on the biological/medical, psychological and social aspects of gender.

Tavistock and Portman awarded Charing Cross Adult Gender Clinic contract

The Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust will act as interim providers for the Charing Cross Adult Gender Identity Clinic in 2017/18.

Earlier this year the current provider, West London Mental Health Trust, served notice on their contract to NHS England on the basis that patients requiring gender identity services would be better served in the long term by another provider.

Paul Jenkins, CEO at Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust said:

“Our focus is on taking over the service with minimum disruption, combining our expertise with the knowledge and skill of the current Adult Gender Clinic staff. We’re heartened by the positivity and openness of the team and we look forward to working together to provide the best possible outcomes for service users.”
